Strip quilts – Scrappy Quilts – Strip Club

Christmas 2014

Photo of a small part of a Christmas Strip Club when there are always lots of freebies raffled off.

When you hear the words Strip Club, what comes to your mind?….. No, no, not that kind!  If you are a quilter you think of fabric, a nice gathering of very respectable ladies, and new quilt designs. That type of strip club takes place in lots of quilt shops all over the country and probably some other countries as well. But do you know how it all started? It was my very own daughter, Daniela, of Cozy Quilt Shop who started it all. Shortly after she opened her shop she started to cut 2 1/2″ strips of new fabric and put them in bundles to sell. The problem was that the customers did not know what to do with these bundles. So she started designing patterns to use with the strips. She then invited everyone to come in for a presentation and showed them how to put it all together. She named it Strip Club and it was such a success and so many people showed up every month, that she decided to share her idea with other shop owners at Quilt Market. That is how (quilt) strip clubs were born all over the country. Fabric companies quickly realized there was a demand  for 2 1/2″ strips. I believe Moda was the first to put bundles together, but lots of other companies quickly followed. Daniela’s designs became very popular and as I wanted to be part of the fun, I started designing quilts as well and I am proud to say that some of them became best sellers.  Here are just a few:

Hanging Gardens, Cotton Rainbow, and Christmas Wreath.

A few of Daniela’s designs:

Lotus Blooms, Gallantly Streaming, and Hot Flashes.

There are lots more designs at and if you’re ever in the San Diego area, stop by the shop. It is really worth a visit.

Talk to you again soon.

  1. Georgette, I didn’t realize you were Daniela’s mother! Hanging Gardens is one of my favorite quilt patterns. It can look so different depending on the fabrics.
